I would also suggest webfaction. I have been using them for some time now and they do what they promote, give you enough control, and are there when you need their help.

If you need a VPS then I would suggest Linode. I have also been using them for a different project and they have been pretty good.

I'm on Linode for a few months now, which just works. Haven't had any cause to talk to support yet, though. Something else I've looked at but haven't tried is prgmr.com, which offers a cheaper entry level deal.

We're using both Slicehost and Linode. (That's a fail for us actually, because their datacenters are located in US and we're not)

They're fairly cheap and reliable.

I agree with Doug Napoleone and giolekva. I've been using WebFaction for about three years, and don't have any complaints to speak of. They give you a decent level of control but take care of the tedious stuff. They're very up front about server issues, which I really appreciate.

Oh, and if I'm not mistaken, they're Pythonistas. I think their control panel is a CherryPy app. It's nice to know that the people running your hosts can relate to what you're doing (and I don't mean just the Python aspect, but also that they're working Web developers).

No personal experience, but http://mikewatkins.ca/2009/11/26/freebsd-vps/ was just on planet python, suggesting ARP Networks also. The only things that really stuck out in that review were the get out of your way-edness described of the setup, the price, and that I didn't know VPS hosts had started offering IPv6, which is pretty cool even though the only IPv6 connectivity I have as a client is through tunnelbroker.net (the client side of the tunnel is my wifi router!).

+1 for Linode. Setup is easy. Their service has been great. I haven't needed their support, but it appears to be great (problems/updates announced on twitter). I'm totally happy.

I am also a fan of Linode. My only complaint is that they don't have more flexible storage options, as I had to upgrade from the 360 plan to the 720 plan simply because I needed more storage (the performance is great on both plans).

Rackspace Cloud (which is a sister site of Slicehost) can get you up for cheap.

More than a single site, I'd recommend going to a 512MB site.

I use arpnetworks http://www.arpnetworks.com/vps

They have a VPS with 768M RAM, 20GB disk space, and 100GB bandwidth for $20/month. I use FreeBSD, its my favorite, but its also pretty easy to use if you are used to Linux. Very clean install with no extra stuff laying around. The ports system makes it real easy to install packages if you aren't into building your own.

They've been pretty reliable so far.
