Hosting?

Posted by on November 29, 2009

I’m starting to work on a simple blog to replace this WordPress instance.

I’ve had a great run with WordPress but I have a few ideas I want to experiment with and I also want to dogfood couchdb-pythonviews a little more.

This blog is hosted on Dreamhost. Dreamhost has been a great host for a low impact blog, the uptime hasn’t been 100% but all the maintenance has been easy and it’s also remained dirt cheap for the last few years.

I need to find a new hosting provider. I have one dedicated server but I don’t plan on running a blog there because that server is a little busy.

I need something cheap. I need root (or some kind of sudo jail) where I can run CouchDB and nginx and manage Python. Preferably Debian. Definitely Linux. Decent uptime.

I’ve considered EC2 but for a low impact site it’s actually quite expensive (~30 dollars a month before bandwidth) and the performance I’m told is about 5x slower than a Macbook.

Backups aren’t necessary since I have CouchDB replication for backing up all the important bits.

I’m open to any and all suggestions.

  1. What a coincedence! Check this out: http://journal.uggedal.com/vps-performance-comparison

Just read that in Reader before this. Seems that the author decided Linode was the best option after weighing all the tests. This makes me happy; I’m on Linode. Great up time, great service.

Dreamhost PS is pretty good, I’ve been really happy with it so far. They’ve also just allowed sudo access as well.

    SliceHost?

They aren’t dirt cheap – however they are pretty reliable :)

    I use arpnetworks http://www.arpnetworks.com/vps

They have a VPS with 768M RAM, 20GB disk space, and 100GB bandwidth for $20/month. I use FreeBSD, its my favorite, but its also pretty easy to use if you are used to Linux. Very clean install with no extra stuff laying around. The ports system makes it real easy to install packages if you aren’t into building your own.

They’ve been pretty reliable so far.

Looks like they do offer Linux too. I didn’t even read that when I signed up, was so excited to use FreeBSD again. :)

Check out http://agathongroup.com , specifically their grid stuff. It has everything you wish, not too expensive. It’s a small shop with some hard core geeks, so they’ll be able to take care of you.

Rackspace Cloud (which is a sister site of Slicehost) can get you up for cheap.

More than a single site, I’d recommend going to a 512MB site.

  10. I’ve been with Linode (360 plan) for 6 months now and I am very happy with them. I host ~6 low traffic sites with the 360MB plan.

  11. I am also a fan of Linode. My only complaint is that they don’t have more flexible storage options, as I had to upgrade from the 360 plan to the 720 plan simply because I needed more storage (the performance is great on both plans).

The is 1 and only 1 host yo need to look at.

    webfaction.com

    EOS.

Linode, linode, linode. But don’t take my word for it!

I’ve been super happy with them for over a year now.

Hi, as Doug mentioned I suggest using webfaction, they’ll give you ssh control and you’ll be able install any packages you want.

+1 for Linode. Setup is easy. Their service has been great. I haven’t needed their support, but it appears to be great (problems/updates announced on twitter). I’m totally happy.

No personal experience, but http://mikewatkins.ca/2009/11/26/freebsd-vps/ was just on planet python, suggesting ARP Networks also. The only things that really stuck out in that review were the get out of your way-edness described of the setup, the price, and that I didn’t know VPS hosts had started offering IPv6, which is pretty cool even though the only IPv6 connectivity I have as a client is through tunnelbroker.net (the client side of the tunnel is my wifi router!).

  17. SteveNo Gravatar says:

I will second DreamhostPS. If you’re already a Dreamhost customer it’s a natural choice. My experience has been very good so far.

  18. WyattNo Gravatar says:

I agree with Doug Napoleone and giolekva. I’ve been using WebFaction for about three years, and don’t have any complaints to speak of. They give you a decent level of control but take care of the tedious stuff. They’re very up front about server issues, which I really appreciate.

Oh, and if I’m not mistaken, they’re Pythonistas. I think their control panel is a CherryPy app. It’s nice to know that the people running your hosts can relate to what you’re doing (and I don’t mean just the Python aspect, but also that they’re working Web developers).

  20. We’re using both Slicehost and Linode. (That’s a fail for us actually, because their datacenters are located in US and we’re not)

    They’re fairly cheap and reliable.

I’m on Linode for a few months now, which just works. Haven’t had any cause to talk to support yet, though. Something else I’ve looked at but haven’t tried is prgmr.com, which offers a cheaper entry level deal.

I would also suggest webfaction. I have been using them for some time now and they do what they promote, give you enough control, and are there when you need their help.

If you need a VPS then I would suggest Linode. I have also been using them for a different project and they have been pretty good.

Linode and Slicehost is a cheap vps and good.
